Did you bring your jersey? – Coaching teenage girls.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel with 12 high school teenagers? For four days. To Las Vegas. Oh. And did I mention they would all be girls?
No? Not on your bucket list?
I’ve been coaching volleyball since I was 19. I’ve spent thousands of hours running drills, perfecting technique, and hitting down balls. I’ve grabbed 6 am coffee for summer workouts and traveled to hundreds of gyms across California.
You know what else I’ve done? I’ve held tampons. And hair ties. And earrings that were left in as athletes walked onto the court. I’ve washed jerseys in hotel sinks, taken off my own socks when they’ve been forgotten by a player, and tied endless bows for cancer awareness games. I’ve played referee for girl drama more times than I’ve played referee to my own children. I’ve been the enemy, and the best friend. I’ve listened to singing in a van, at a decibel that would literally make your ears bleed. I’ve heard more inappropriate rap music, lip synced in perfect unison, than any one person needs for a lifetime. I’ve been loved by parents, and hated by them. And I have come to an understanding that you cannot make everyone happy. Ever.
But you know what? I freaking love it. Cause when your collegiate playing days are over, you take on the next best thing. Coaching.
I’ve been lucky enough to have spent the last 8 seasons coaching a hugely successful varsity team with one of my best friends. We’re basically sister wives for 6 months out of the year, and I think one day we may need therapy for all the times we’ve had to play counselor to a teenage girl.
Are you still wondering about what the Vegas trip would be like with 12 teenage girls? Well let me save you the effort and just show you.
Here’s a little taste of what our version of crazy looks like. All. The. Time.
